She sang at the March on Washington in August 1963. Bob Dylan said, "the first thing that turned me on to folk singing was Odetta." In spite of failing health that caused her to use a wheelchair, Odetta performed 60 concerts in the last two years, singing for 90 minutes at a time. She had hoped to live to sing at the Inauguration.

Odetta, widely honored as the "Voice of the Civil Rights Movement" died yesterday, age 77. When I was a kid infatuated with Bob Dylan and Joan Baez I looked for their roots in the blues and found Odetta. I booked her to play at my college and was blown away by the authenticity.
